Terms Meaning
alias An alternate name that can be assigned to a field or dimension member.
bin A grouping of measures in a user-defined data source.
bookmark The Bookmarks folder in the Tableau repository contains a .tbm file for a single worksheet. /b10> Much like Web browser bookmarks, .tbm files are a convenient way to quickly display different analyses.
calculated field Use formulas to modify new fields created by existing fields in the data source.
crosstab The text table view. /b10> Use a text table to display the numbers associated with the member.
dashboard A combination of several views arranged on a single page. /b10> Use dashboards to compare and monitor a variety of data at the same time.
data pane The pane on the left side of the workbook shows the fields of the data source connected to Tableau. /b10> Fields are divided into peacekeeping measures.
The data pane also displays custom fields, such as calculations, merged fields, and groups. /b10>You can build a view of your data by dragging fields from the Data pane to individual shelves that are part of each worksheet.
data Source page The page where the data source can be set. /b10> The Data Source page typically consists of four main areas: the left pane, the join area, the preview area, and the metadata area.
dimension Categorical data field. /b10> Dimensions typically hold discrete data, such as hierarchies and members that cannot be aggregated. /b11> Examples of dimensions include dates, customer names, and customer groups.
extract Saved subsets of data sources that can be used to improve performance and offline analysis. /b10> You can create extracts by defining filters and restrictions that contain the data you need in the extract.
filters shelf The shelf on the left side of the workbook, which you can use to filter views by using measures and dimensions to exclude data from the view.
format pane A pane that contains the formatting that controls the entire worksheet, as well as the fields in the view. /b10> When opened, the Format pane appears on the left side of the workbook.
level of detail (LOD) expression The syntax that supports aggregation on dimensions other than the view level. /b10> Using the details expression level, you can attach one or more levels to any aggregation expression.
marks A portion of a view that visually represents one or more rows in a data source. /b10> Markers can be, for example, bars, lines, or squares. /b11> You can control the type, color, and size of tags.
marks card With the cards on the left side of the view, you can drag fields to control marker properties such as type, color, size, shape, labels, tool tips and details.
pages shelf A shelf on the left side of a view that you can use to split a view into a series of pages based on members and values in discrete or continuous fields. /b10> Adding fields to a page shelf is like adding a field to a Rows shelf, just creating a new page for each new line.
rows shelf The shelf at the top of the workbook that can be used to create rows of data sheets. /b10> Shelves accept any number of sizes and measures. /b11> When you place a dimension on the Rows area, Tableaus creates a title for members of that size. /b12> Tableau creates a quantitative axis for a measure when it is placed on the Rows dashboard.
shelves The named area is on the left and top of the view. /b10> Build a view by putting fields on the shelf. /b11> Some shelves are only available when selecting certain tag types. /b12> For example, a shape bracket is available only if you select a shape marker type.
workbook A file with a .twb extension that contains one or more worksheets (and possibly dashboards and stories).
worksheet Create a worksheet that creates a view of the data by dragging the field to the shelf.
