Why would raising your arm above your head relieve arm pain?

Asked by Rodney Hill on Nov 29, 2021 FAQ

Arm pain. It's not often that raising the arm above the head will relieve the ache in the shoulder, or tingling in the fingers. What complicates things is that the pinched nerve may then cause the shoulder to become weak; then you may have a secondary injury which muddies the diagnostic waters.
In respect to this,
If you only have pain when you raise your arm to shoulder height or above, you may have inflammation of the bursa or tendons causing an impingement syndrome, but if you can’t raise your arms above your shoulder because of weakness, you more likely have a rotator cuff tear.
Accordingly, Weakness in the legs or the spine can be a result of bad blood circulation. One of the ways to increase blood circulation is to lift your arms above your head. You should address the shoulders, even if they’re not flexible — there’s no way you can do it without straightening them out.
Additionally,
Pain can be a common reason you can’t lift your arm. You aggravate your shoulder somehow, flaring it up and causing a shoulder impingement type of problem. That pain alone can make it hard to lift your arm, because the higher you lift it, the more pain you experience as the rotator cuff tendons rub against the tip of your shoulder blade.
Consequently,
During an arm raise we’re not only moving up, we’re also moving back. We’re rotating, and our axis of rotation is the shoulder joint. We need to know the rotational work our arm has to do. Rotational work is directly related to the amount of degrees the arm moves and the torque of the movement.
