Asked by Phillip Acosta on Nov 30, 2021 FAQ

There is no cmd /version that I've been able to find and the results of SET in a command prompt session don't give anything obviously unique (between XP and Win7 anyway). The version of cmd.exe should actually be pretty irrelevant, unless you try to use features that didn't exist before (in command.com for example). There is the pseudovariable
Additionally,
Microsoft Windows is an operating system. Cmd.exe runs the Command Prompt, a command line interpreter for Windows. Thereof, Cmd.exe was first developed on 11/08/2006 in the Windows Vista Operating System for Windows Vista. On 07/29/2015, version 10.0.15063.0 (WinBuild.160101.0800) was released for Windows 10. Cmd.exe is included in Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 8.
In addition,
The initial version of cmd.exe for Windows NT was developed by Therese Stowell. Windows CE 2.11 was the first embedded Windows release to support a console and a Windows CE version of cmd.exe. On Windows CE.NET 4.2, Windows CE 5.0 and Windows Embedded CE 6.0 it is also referred to as Command Processor Shell.
Also,

The initial version of cmd.exe for Windows NT was developed by Therese Stowell.
