What is a ferry range, combat range and air combat range for?

Asked by Ruth Noble on Dec 10, 2021 FAQ

Ferry range is the maximum range at economical cruising speed with full internal fuel and drop tanks. Combat range is usually quoted as combat radius, it is the distance the fighter flies from base including climb to altitude, then an allowance for patrolling, and for fighting then returning to base.
In addition,
When all fuel is consumed, the engines stop and the aircraft will lose its propulsion. Ferry range means the maximum range that a aircraft engaged in ferry flying can achieve. This usually means maximum fuel load, optionally with extra fuel tanks and minimum equipment. It refers to transport of aircraft without any passengers or cargo.
Similarly, Combat range is the maximum range the aircraft can fly when carrying ordnance. Combat radius is a related measure based on the maximum distance a warplane can travel from its base of operations, accomplish some objective, and return to its original airfield with minimal reserves.
Accordingly,
Combat radius is always smaller than maximum range, the distance which the aircraft can fly the farthest with maximum payload and without refueling, or ferry range, the distance the aircraft can fly the farthest with drop tanks, no ordnance and without refueling.
