How are giant pandas and red pandas related?

Asked by Lee Pittman on Dec 09, 2021 FAQ

Giant pandas (large black and white animals from China) are part of the bear family -- their closest relative is the Spectacled Bear. Red pandas (smaller red and white animals, also from China) are the last remaining animals in their family -- all of their relatives are extinct.
Subsequently,
The Red Fox, whose scientific name is Vulpes Vulpes, is from the Canidae family. They are both mammals and are the same size. However, the Red Panda and the Red Fox share similarities and differences in their appearance, habitat, diet, behaviour, reproduction and status of population.
Also Know, Red pandas aren't bears or racoons and aren't closely related to giant pandas at all. They are part of their independent family for a long time now. A family that is closely related to the so called mustelids (skunks, raccoons, and otters/weasels/badgers) .
Moreover,
Genetic studies have shown that red pandas are more closely related to weasels and raccoons than to panda bears. However, raccoons, weasels, red pandas, and bears (including giant pandas) are all part of the branch of the carnivore family related to dogs!
Also,
Yes , they could also be dangerous. They have powerful teeth and claws that may bite you and take your life away. When red pandas threatened they try to escape by running up a rock and tree. Sometimes, they make their appearance more threatening and larger they often stand on their hind legs and extend their claws.
