Can a pt pipe be used with a bsp pipe?

Asked by Marisol Hutchinson on Dec 09, 2021 FAQ

PT is very similar to the BSPT or R. Interestingly, they are interchangeable and compatible. PT male pipe end doesn’t have a 30⁰ flare. That’s why it will not be compatible with BSPP female fittings. But you can always create a leak-proof seal using PTFE tape or any sealant compounds at your disposal.
Likewise,
Both styles have the same thread angle, shape, and pitch (threads per inch). However, BSPT threads are tapered and BSPP threads are straight (parallel). BSP threads have a 55° included angle and have rounded peaks and valleys (this is a Whitworth thread form). Here are the actual thread dimension data for BSPP and BSPT threads.
In this manner, So instead of having the Standard 55 degree angle on the threads, they changed it to 60. (Yes you have to ask yourself why?). The net result is that whereas the DIN pipe threads are interchangeable with BSP pipe threads, the American NPT pipe threads are not.
Just so,
WARNING : Never, never try to mate a BSP fitting with an NPT or NPS fitting if the pressure holding capability is at all critical. NPT/NPS and BSP threads are not compatible due to the differences in their thread forms, and not just the fact that most diametrical sizes have a different pitch.
Also,
JIS Tapered Pipe Thread Type – PT PT thread type is identical and interchangeable with BSPT thread type. However, since the male PT thread does not have a 30-degree flare, it will not mate with the BSPP female swivel with conical seat. Also, we recommended using thread sealant with PT threads to ensure a leak-free seal.
