Netscape is the first commercial web browser. I t was released in 1994. N etscape is a commercial software, but it also offers free versions that run on operating systems such as Unix, VMS, Macs, and Microsoft Windows.

In April 1997, Microsoft launched the IE 4.0 series, which was almost a hit with bad reviews, but Netscape, which also grew to 4.0, went all the way. H owever, Netscape's good days didn't last. B y the time of Windows 98, Microsoft had come up with a must-win, bundling IE with Windows 98 for free, and IE was slowly getting better. S ince browsers are available in the operating system, why buy one separately? Faced with a strong threat from Microsoft, Netscape decided in November 1998 to make the software free and open to all program sources, focusing on the commercial market. N etscape was acquired by AOL shortly before it was implemented. on. In 2003, the Mozilla Foundation parted company with Netscape, giving AOL, its former parent company, $2 million as a breakup gift.
