What is Mozilla?

Mozilla project

Mozilla is not a web browser!

Mozilla is a framework for building web applications using web standards such as CSS, XML, RDF, and so on.

Mozilla is a non-profit open source web development project that develops program code for use in the Mozilla Suite of Applications.

The Mozilla Application Suite is a complete set of web applications (browsers, chat clients, news clients, mail clients, and so on).

Mozilla believes that the Internet is a public resource that needs to be improved and protected.

History of the Mozilla project

In 1998, with the release of netscape source code, the Mozilla project was created as an open source community.

Within a year, new community members from around the world had added many new features to Netscape's next browser and enhanced its existing features, while the Mozilla project grew. Instead of just working on Netscape's next browser, members are starting to create browsers, development tools, and other projects.

In 2002, the first major release, Mozilla 1.0, was released. T his suite has made many improvements to browsers, email clients, and other applications. B ut not many people use it (more than 90% of Internet users use Internet Explorer). That same year, Mozilla released the first version of Phoenix (later renamed Firefox).

In 2003, the Mozilla Project created the Mozilla Foundation, an independent non-profit organization. The Mozilla Foundation continuously manages the day-to-day operations of the Mozilla project.

Firefox 1.0 was released in 2004, a major success. F irefox has been downloaded more than 1 million times in less than a year. Firefox's popularity helps return selectors to users.

In 2008, Firefox achieved a 20% global market share.

In 2008, Mozilla celebrated its 10th anniversary. Over the past decade, the community has shown that commercial companies can benefit from collaboration on open source projects.

Mozilla Foundation

The Mozilla Foundation was founded in July 2003 in Muntinviu, California, USA.

The Mozilla Foundation, or Mozilla or MoFo, is a non-profit organization established to support and lead open source Mozilla projects. T he organization develops management and development policies, operates key foundation organizations, and manages trademarks and other intellectual property rights. It owns a subsidiary called Mozilla, employs Mozilla developers and coordinates the distribution of Mozilla Firefox web browsers and Mozilla Thunderbird email clients.

The Mozilla Foundation describes itself as "a non-profit organization dedicated to providing diverse choices and innovations in the Internet sector".

In its early stages, the Mozilla Foundation began to move into a wider area than mozilla org, taking things that had previously been pushed to Netscape and Mozilla partners.

In its transition to "end-user orientation," the Mozilla Foundation and a number of commercial companies signed up to sell CDs containing Mozilla software and provide telephone support services. In these moves, the Mozilla Foundation chose a former Netscape vendor.

The Mozilla Foundation has become more confident in its intellectual property rights, and they have introduced new policies for the use of their trademarks.

The Mozilla Foundation has also started new projects such as market expansion.

With the establishment of Mozilla, the Mozilla Foundation transferred all software development and business-related activities to the new subsidiary.

The Mozilla Foundation, which now focuses on regulatory and strategic matters, continues to manage projects that are not product-based, such as Camino and SeaMonkey.

The Mozilla Foundation now owns the Mozilla trademark and other intellectual property rights and fully licenses Mozilla's use.

The Mozilla Foundation also controls Mozilla's source code library and determines who can submit code into the library.

A roadmap for the Mozilla Foundation

Mozilla decided to develop a new development roadmap. Here are some key points from the new roadmap:

  • Focus on stand-alone applications (FireFox, Thunderbird mail/news applications, and stand-alone designers)
  • Make Firefox and Thunderbird Mozilla's top products
  • Maintain a suite of SeaMonkey (now Mozilla Browser) applications for enterprises and organizations with large Mozilla deployments
  • Use the one-year research and development cycle to maintain the Mozilla 1.4 branch as a "distributor/vendor" branch used by the organization
  • Fix the critical Gecko layout architecture vulnerability. All Mozilla applications benefit from these Gecko improvements.
  • Excellence. Do less, but do better!

Confusing Mozilla name

The first Netscape browser used a code engine called Mozilla. 0 is driven by a code engine called Mozilla 1.0. Netscape 2.0 uses Mozilla 2.0, Netscape 3.0 uses Mozilla 3.0, and Netscape 4.0 uses Mozilla 4.0.

In 1998, Netscape 4 made its source code public - and established the development of Netscape 5 as an open source project.

This open source project that created Netscape 5 is called "The Mozilla Project". Curiously, the code engine for this Mozilla project is called Gecko.

Unfortunately, after the 4.0 release, it took Netscape more than three and a half years to develop the next-generation browser. T his delay undermines Netscape's chances of being a reliable alternative to Microsoft's IE browser. Microsoft released its IE 5.0 shortly after the Mozilla project began, and Microsoft's IE 6.0 was ready before Netscape managed to release a working browser.

Netscape 6.0, based on Gecko M18 (Milestone 18), was released in November 2000.

After netscape 6.0 was released, the Mozilla project began developing Netscape 7 based on an engine called Gecko 1.0.

Netscape 6 and 7 are built on Mozilla, and Netscape and Mozilla are almost identical suites of applications.

Netscape 7 claims to use a code engine called Gecko 1.0.

At this point, the Mozilla project is developing a new browser called Firefox. In the past, Firefox was called Mozilla Firebird (and Mozilla Firebird used to be called Phoenix, which claims to be a new version of Mozilla).
