HTML ISO-8859-1 Reference Manual

Character sets supported by modern browsers:

ISO-8859-1

ISO-8859-1 is the default character set for most browsers.

ISO-8859-1 is a single-byte encoding that is down-compatible with ASCII.

The lower part of ISO-8859-1 (code between 1 and 127) is the original ASCII character set (0-9 numbers, capital and lowercase English alphabets, and some special characters).

The higher parts of ISO-8859-1 (codes from 160 to 255) contain characters used in some Western European countries and some special characters that are widely used, all with entity names.

Most of these symbols can be used without entity references, but entity names or entity numbers provide a way to express symbols that are not easy to type through the keyboard.

Tip: The entity name is case sensitive.

HTML reserved characters

HTML and XHTML reserve some characters. For example, you cannot use text that contains these characters because the browser might mistake it for an HTML tag.

HTML and XHTML central processors must identify the five special characters listed in the following table:

字符 实体编号 实体名称 描述
" " " quotation mark
' ' ' apostrophe
& & & ampersand
< < < less-than
> > > greater-than

Note: Entity names are case sensitive!
