Apache Pig Diagnostic operator

The Load statement simply loads the data into the specified relationship in Apache Pig. /b10> To verify the execution of a Load statement, you must use the Diagnostic operator. Pig Latin offers four different types of diagnostic operators:

• Dump operator
  
• The Describe operator
  
• The Explanation operator
  
• The Illustration operator
  

In this chapter, we'll discuss pig Latin's Dump operator.

Dump operator

The Dump operator is used to run the Pig Latin statement and display the results on the screen, which is typically used for debugging purposes.

Grammar

The syntax of the Dump operator is given below.

grunt> Dump Relation_Name

Cases

Suppose you have a file in HDFS that contains the following student_data.txt.

001,Rajiv,Reddy,9848022337,Hyderabad
002,siddarth,Battacharya,9848022338,Kolkata
003,Rajesh,Khanna,9848022339,Delhi
004,Preethi,Agarwal,9848022330,Pune
005,Trupthi,Mohanthy,9848022336,Bhuwaneshwar
006,Archana,Mishra,9848022335,Chennai.

We use the LOAD operator to read it into the relationship student, as shown below.

grunt> student = LOAD 'hdfs://localhost:9000/pig_data/student_data.txt' 
   USING PigStorage(',')
   as ( id:int, firstname:chararray, lastname:chararray, phone:chararray, 
   city:chararray );

Now, use the Dump operator to print the contents of the relationship, as shown below.

grunt> Dump student

Once the Pig Latin statement above is executed, a MapReduce job is started to read data from HDFS, which produces the following output.
